Portugal Wines 2015

This spring, Whole Foods Market is celebrating wines from Portugal, an emerging wine region that deserves a closer look, by featuring eight versatile, food-friendly selections. Representing six unique growing regions in Portugal, these wines are slam dunks for the price, all under $20.

The company’s global buyers sought out the regional superstars of Portugal to showcase the best of the country’s wines. Even the well-known winemakers in the lineup are tough to find at most retailers, so Whole Foods Market is proud to offer a Portuguese selection that includes something for everyone – from the value minded wine lover looking for an exciting new favorite to the budding wine connoisseur with a taste for adventure.

Below is a list of Whole Foods Market’s featured Portuguese wines. Our buyers have included some suggestions based on wines that most shoppers are familiar with.

Lima by J Portugal Ramos Loureiro Vinho Verde – Elegant and engaging, the citrus and floral bouquet leads to a body with bright, impressive acidity and notes of pineapple and dried mango and a lingering finish. Usually a blend, this single varietal Loureiro vinho verde is unique and more complex than your typical quaffer. $9.99

If you like pinot grigio or sauvignon blanc, you’ll love this vinho verde.

Esporão Monte Velho Alentejano – With aromas of fresh white stone fruits and citrus and a well-balanced palate with persistent aromatic fruit and a long finish. $11.99

If you like Chablis (the real stuff, from France) or California chardonnay, try this white blend from Alentejano.

Orlana Rosé Vinho Verde – This fruity, slightly effervescent rosé has a bouquet of raspberry and strawberry, notes of dried cranberries and crisp citrus, and a touch of sweetness. $7.99

Offering something for every palate, if you like pink moscato or white zinfandel, enjoy this rosé vinho verde.

Periquita Original – The aroma on this dark and dry ruby red has wild berries, vanilla and herbs, and the body is soft and velvety with delicate spice notes that lead to a long, smooth finish. $11.99

If you like tempranillo, enjoy this popular red blend made from the wine grape periquita, also known as castelão.

Alvaro Castro DAC Dão Red Blend – With aromas of new leather and black pepper, this dark ruby red has a silky smooth mouth feel with concentrated smoky black fruit and earthy flavors, silky tannins and a long finish. $16.99

If you like Rhône blends, try this serious red from Alvaro Castro, arguably one of the best winemakers in the Dão (decant before enjoying!).

Luis Pato Colheita Seleccionada Vinho Regional Atlantico Beira Atlantico – This wine presents a deep, elegant bouquet with dark chocolate and raspberry notes. Medium to full bodied, this red has layers of dark fruit, plums and lingering spices. $12.99

If you like cabernet sauvignon, try this red made from the Portuguese grapes baga and touriga nacional.

Casa Ferreirinha Esteva Red – A fruity bouquet leads to warm notes of cedar and tobacco with a palate that starts off softly and shows a fine structure with polished tannins and a beautiful, fresh acidity. $9.99

If you like Chianti, try this red blend from the Douro.

Quinta do Crasto Douro Red -- With intense berry fruit and floral notes on the nose, this red is balanced and well-structured on the palate with round, finely textured tannins and a lingering finish of spice and crushed stone. $16.99

If you like Bordeaux or Napa Cabernet, enjoy this elegant red made by one of Portugal’s family estate wineries in the Douro.
