At an early age, A.C. Gallo was taught to appreciate food and the art of food presentation. His parents owned a top-rated restaurant and his grandparents owned a fruit stand in the Bronx and later started an Italian specialty grocery store and wholesale produce business. Gallo began stocking shelves at Bread & Circus in 1977 when it was just one small specialty natural foods store with only ten employees. He helped grow Bread & Circus to six stores and over 800 employees by 1992 when it was acquired by Whole Foods Market. After the merger, Gallo briefly left the company, returning in 1993 as the Vice President of Perishables. He quickly moved into regional leadership as the Northeast Region’s vice president and then, in 1996, as regional president. He moved back into a global role as Executive Vice President of Operations in 2001, and then as Co-President and Co-COO in 2004. In 2010 he became President and COO. In 2019 he began serving as President and CMO.
Gallo is committed to sustainable agriculture and to fostering the growth of food in its purest state through meaningful relationships with suppliers. As president and CMO, he is deeply involved in all product sourcing and quality standards initiatives, including the company’s animal welfare standards, sustainable seafood rating system and commitment to labeling transparency.
