BALTIMORE, MD. (March 12, 2020) – Whole Foods Market will open its new 47,000 square-foot store in Harbor East, located at 711 S Central Ave at 9 a.m. on Thursday, April 9. The store will serve as a relocation of the existing store on Fleet Street.
“We can’t wait for our customers to experience their new Harbor East store,” said Kim Tate, Store Team Leader. “We’re excited to provide our customers with an even larger selection of high-quality, fresh and innovative products, a wide range of prepared foods for breakfast, lunch and dinner, as well as new features including an in-store food hall featuring local partners and patio seating with views of the harbor.”
All food at Whole Foods Market must meet the company’s rigorous quality standards, which prohibit hydrogenated fats, high-fructose corn syrup and artificial sweeteners, as well as over 100 colors, flavors and preservatives commonly found in food. In addition, all beauty and body care products must meet the company’s body care standards, which ban more than 100 commonly used ingredients, including phthalates, parabens and microbeads.
Special features of the store will include:
- Produce department offering a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as selections from local growers, and a range of items with Whole Foods Market’s Whole Trade® Guarantee, which supports suppliers that are committed to ethical trade, working conditions and the environment.
- Floral department featuring beautiful, fresh flowers and different plants featured every month.
- Full-service butcher offering made in-house sausages and dry-aged beef, as well as oven-ready options and selections from local suppliers including pork, lamb and poultry.
- Seafood counter featuring fresh and frozen seafood, with all offerings being either sustainable wild-caught or Responsibly Farmed, including local smoked fish, headfish, clams, oysters and crab.
- Specialty foods section with a self-serve pasta bar and a variety of cheeses, chocolates and pastries, many from local brands.
- In-house bakery featuring fresh baked breads, cakes, pastries and items for special diets.
- Prepared foods department with hot and cold food bars featuring seasonal and plant-based options, smoked meats, build your own mezze bowls, salads, soups, organic rotisserie chickens, sushi and self-serve Neapolitan and Sicilian style pizza.
- Bulk section offering more than 140 varieties of nuts, seeds, granola, dried fruit and candy.
- Beauty, body and home section featuring a bulk body care wall, a variety of mini travel necessities, and options from local suppliers, some of which are new to Whole Foods Market.
- More than 1,000 products throughout the store from approximately 200 local suppliers, some of which are new to Whole Foods Market or are recipients of Whole Foods Market’s Local Producer Loan Program, which provides low-interest loans to local producers to help grow their businesses.
The new Harbor East store will also include The Forum Food Hall, which will feature two venues from Friends of Whole Foods Market partners:
- EJJI Ramen: Award-winning, Baltimore-based ramen bar that will unveil a menu of Asian-inspired upscale street food, featuring hand-pulled noodles and Shaobing sandwiches made with savory or sweet layered sesame flatbread, made fresh in-house every day.
- Gypsy Queen Café: Local food truck turned restaurant, founders Annmarie Langton and Tom Looney offer an array of street food-inspired dishes, including the popular Crab Cone, a cone filled with French fries and topped with a Maryland-style crab cake.
Located on the second floor of the store, The Forum Food Hall also offers patio seating with views of the harbor.
The Friends of Whole Foods Market program provides the opportunity for innovative businesses and entrepreneurs that align with the mission and quality of Whole Foods Market to establish their own independent retail spaces inside Whole Foods Market stores to bring shoppers unique experiences.

To celebrate the opening, 5% of the store’s net sales on April 16 will benefit UEmpower of Maryland’s newest program, “The Food Project,” which aims to empower the South West Baltimore community by providing kids with cooking lessons, farming and restaurant training, job opportunities, sustainable food sources and mentorship.
Whole Foods Market Harbor East will employ approximately 250 full and part-time team members.
Following the grand opening, the store will be open from 7 a.m. – 10 p.m. daily.
