January 2000.

For the third year in a row, FORTUNE magazine honored Whole Foods Market as one of the “100 Best Companies to Work for in America.” This year we came in number 72 on the list (down from #48 from the prior year.) Thirty-five of the companies who were on the list in 1999 dropped off the list entirely in 2000.

Two-thirds of the scoring for the list is based upon the answers from 250 randomly selected Team Members to 57 questions on the Great Place to Work survey. The other third of the score reflects FORTUNE’s evaluation of the materials we presented as a company. This year our presentation focused on our Team Members, their stories, opportunities, caring for one another and other programs we felt were special.

Here’s what they had to say about us: “Strongly egalitarian. Not only is the CEO’s salary capped at ten times the average store worker’s, but employees can see anybody’s gross pay. Grievances settled by a panel of non-management employees.”
