NEW YORK (June 2, 2022) Whole Foods Market opened its new store at 63 Madison Ave. (between 27th St. and 28th St.), in New York City’s NoMad neighborhood on Wednesday, June 1. At more than 54,000 square feet, the store’s metropolitan feel nods to nearby New York landmarks like the Flatiron Building and Madison Square Park. The new location’s product assortment features more than 1,000 local items from New York City and the surrounding area, hand-picked by Christopher Manca, Local Forager for Whole Foods Market’s Northeast Region.

Whole Foods Market NoMad also marks the debut of several new local suppliers and products, including whole bean Vietnamese coffee from Nguyen Coffee Supply, frozen assorted bagels from Black Seed Bagels, plant-based specialty cheese from Rind, turmeric and chai elixirs from Anjali’s Cup and specialty chocolate bars from North South Confections.

On-site dining options include, Za’atar, a quick-service Mediterranean venue with locally sourced falafel from Yosi Kosher Kitchen and pitas from Angel Bakeries, Nomad 63 by Whole Foods Market, a bar offering beer, wine, and bar bites like house-made fish-n-chips and vegan cauliflower nachos, and a full-service coffee bar operated by Café Grumpy, another New York favorite.

Features of the NoMad store include:

  • An array of organic, conventional, local and Sourced for Good produce, plus offerings from more than 20 local farms, including salads from Gotham Greens’ New York City farms, microgreens from Upward Farms as well as basil, parsley and cilantro from Square Roots.
  • Specialty department dedicated to celebrating cheesemakers and artisan producers. Local items include fresh bulk pastas from Severino Pasta, Tubby Alpine style cheese from Brooklyn’s Crown Finish Caves and fruit spreads from Maya’s Jams. The cheese counter is overseen by trained cheesemongers who can offer recommendations for any occasion and create custom boards.
  • Full-service seafood counter featuring an expanded selection of whole fish, fillets, oyster varieties, mussels, littleneck clams, sea/bay scallops, squid and in-season soft shell crabs. Local options include oysters from West Robins Oyster Company, seafood cakes from Lagniappe Foods and smoked salmon from Catsmo Artisan Smokehouse. All offerings are either sustainable wild-caught or Responsibly Farmed.
  • Full-service meat counter, with butchers available to cut steaks to order or debone poultry. Featured department offerings include dry-aged beef, ground beef and made-in-house sausages. Local options include pork from Briarwood Cattle Farm and sausages from Brooklyn Cured Sausage.
  • An extensive selection of more than 180 craft beers. Local options include Sun Up Hazy IPA from Talea Beer Co, Money IPA from Barrier Brewing and Pilsner Vliet from Three’s Brewing.
  • A Prepared Foods section with a food hall feel that includes hot and cold food bars, sushi by Kikka and a full-service pizza station.
  • Bakery offering made-from-scratch bread as well as everyday favorites, such as Whole Foods Market’s Berry Chantilly Cake, brown butter cookies and vegan croissants and scones. The department also offers a wide variety of special diet items, mini bundt cakes from By the Way Bakery, keto cookies from Fancypants Baking Co. as well as an assortment of vegan baked goods from Abe’s. Local offerings include Ancient Grain and Oat Porridge Breads from Pain d’avignon, pitas from Angel Bakeries and frozen desserts from Bindi.
  • Wellness and Beauty section featuring more than 100 local products, including hand-poured candles from Scrumptious Wick, soap and body care from Nopelera, wood wick candles from Tiny Kitchen Candle Co. and artisan soaps from Center Street Soap Company.

All food at Whole Foods Market must meet the company’s rigorous Quality Standards, which prohibit hydrogenated fats, high-fructose corn syrup and more than 230 flavors, colors, sweeteners and other ingredients commonly found in food. In addition, all beauty and body care products must meet the company’s body care standards, which ban more than 180 commonly used ingredients, including phthalates, parabens and microbeads.

To give back to the New York City community, Whole Foods Market will donate $9,000 and an array of fresh food to Rethink Food, an organization dedicated to creating a more sustainable and equitable food system by rethinking the way food is produced and distributed. Whole Foods Market will also sponsor the Madison Square Park Conservancy’s Pollinator Picnic, which is dedicated to celebrating native North American pollinators.
