Local shoppers now have a new eco-friendly and cost-effective option to help them enjoy quality beer in the comfort of their own home. Whole Foods Market Kailua recently expanded its bottled and canned beer selection to include several keg options for shoppers to purchase. Shoppers can choose from a variety of brews starting at just $64.99 a keg.
“What’s great about this new option is that our customers can get the best of both worlds with their keg purchase – quality beer in value quantities,” said Sundy Macalinao, Whole Foods Market beer specialist. “Our five gallon kegs will last for about two weeks, pouring fresh beer in every glass.”
Kegs are preferable from an environmental standpoint, since the containers and equipment are sterilized and can be reused. Economically, purchasing beer in keg form costs less per ounce compared to bottles or cans. And for those who own a kegerator — a home system for chilling and dispensing — beer stays fresher longer.
Whole Foods Market now offers kegs in five gallon and 15.5 gallon sizes, with a wide selection of seasonal and year-round beers available such as local brews like Maui Bikini Blonde or Aloha Lager, American craft beers like Ballast point Sculpin IPA and Rogue Dead Guy Ale and imported beer such as Peroni and Sapporo. A three to five day lead time is required to order the keg (which includes a 24-hour period to allow the keg contents to settle from transit). Orders can be placed in person at Whole Foods Market’s specialty department or by calling Whole Foods Market Kailua at (808) 263-6800.
The cost of the beer varies depending on the brand and type of beer selected. In addition to the beer itself, customers pay a refundable $30 keg deposit. Tap and pump sets and plastic chilling barrels are also available to rent for an additional $50 and $15 deposit, respectively.
