This year Earth Day is in full bloom at Greystone Garden, a community garden designed to educate community members and residents about sustainable gardening practices located on the grounds of Greystone Mansion. Community members are invited to dig in on Saturday, April 20, 2013 from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m., to help plant summer squash and prepare a new pumpkin patch for the fall.

“Our goal at the Greystone Garden is to create a place for residents and students to learn about sustainable gardening, earn community service credits and produce food that we are able to share with area food banks and meal programs,” said Barbara Linder, Greystone Garden leader. “When many people think of Beverly Hills they think of opulence and shopping – this is one of the neighborhood’s best kept secrets and we hope that residents will stop by and take advantage of this hidden gem.”

Fresh produce grown at Greystone Garden and products from Whole Foods Market are donated each week to nonprofit organizations in the Beverly Hills area, providing meals to those in need.

“Whole Foods Market is committed not only to selling the highest quality natural and organic products available, but to supporting organizations and groups that share our vision of building healthier communities,” said Ellen Prager, marketing supervisor at Whole Foods Market Beverly Hills. “We are pleased to partner with the Greystone Garden this Earth Day and encourage our shoppers to join in their mission to grow and maintain a sustainable, organic garden for everyone to enjoy.”

With the help of Whole Foods Market partners, Greystone Garden has received plants from Armstrong Growers, compost from Community Recycling, beneficial insects from Organic Control and organic seeds from Botanical Interests.

Greystone Garden is also supported by donations and is 100 percent volunteer-driven. The garden has also received volunteer support from local Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts troops, students from area schools, members of faith-based organizations, and area businesses.

The Greystone Garden planting event will take place on the grounds of Greystone Mansion located at 905 Loma Vista Drive, Beverly Hills, California, 90210.
