Kahului, HI (February 22, 2011) On March 2, 2011, Whole Foods Market Kahului is helping shoppers rule the airwaves at the store’s annual Community Support Day, which will benefit Hawaii Public Radio (HPR). Whole Foods Market will donate five percent of the day’s sales to Hawaii Public Radio, a locally operated, listener-supported, and community-licensed broadcast service.

As part of its commitment to supporting local causes in the community in which it works, Whole Foods Market stores, nationwide, hold Community Support Days three times a year and donate five percent of that day’s net sales to a local nonprofit or educational organization. Whole Foods Market’s donation to Hawaii Public Radio will help the station in its efforts to expand its reach with its newest station, KIPM (90.7 FM).

“Hawaii Public Radio relies on the support of companies like Whole Foods Market to continue to bring news and information, local talk shows, music and cultural  programming to our dedicated listeners across the state as we work to expand our reach for Maui residents,” said Michael Titterton, Hawaii Public Radio’s president. “Funds from Whole Foods Market’s Community Support Day will help us in our goal to provide Maui County listeners with access to a new, distinct array of public radio programs to choose from in addition to those they’re already enjoying on KKUA 90.7.”

Hawaii Public Radio will put the funds raised toward the purchase and installation of a new, state-of-the-art transmitter as well as overhead expenses – like electricity, rent and contract engineer services – for KIPM’s first year of operation.

“Whole Foods Market is committed to supporting organizations who bring our community together and is proud to support Hawai‘i Public Radio in its mission to keep Maui listeners informed and engaged,” said Elyse Ditzel, Whole Foods Market Kahului marketing supervisor. “We look forward to seeing KIPM 89.7 grow into another quality radio news source for Maui County.”

Since opening its first store in Hawai‘i in 2008, Whole Foods Market has given more than $32,000 to island community groups including Maui Aloha Aina, Friends of the Maui Library, H?na High and Elementary, Hawai‘i Nature Center and The Maui Farm to name just a few.
