(YONKERS, NY – Sept. 28,  2011) –Whole Foods Market (NASDAQ: WFM), the world’s leading natural and organic foods supermarket and America’s first nationally certified organic grocer, will open the doors to its Yonkers store on Wednesday, October 19, 2011 at 9 am.  Located at the new Ridge Hill development off of the New York State Thruway (Rt. 87) at 1 Ridge Hill Boulevard, the new location will open with a traditional bread breaking ceremony. To celebrate opening day, Whole Foods Market will offer storewide tastings, vendor sampling, special sale items, giveaways and more.  

5 percent of the total sales from opening day will be donated to Riverkeeper, a member-supported waterway watchdog organization devoted to defending the Hudson River and its tributaries. Based in Westchester County, Riverkeeper is dedicated to protecting the drinking water supply of nine million New York City and Hudson Valley residents.

The new, 51,000-square-foot store will offer a variety of locally sourced foods and showcase venues and products consistent with the Whole Foods Market promise of offering the highest-quality natural and organic products, while addressing the needs of the Yonkers community. From popular offerings such as local and seasonal fresh produce, coffee and gelato bar, brick-oven pizza, made-to-order paninis and sushi among a bevy of prepared food choices, including the first-of-its- kind “Hot Hoagies” sandwich venue, featuring a variety of regional sandwich favorites such as Memphis pulled pork, Philly roast pork, Chicago-style Italian beef, and more!

The Yonkers store will be the first Whole Foods Market location in the state that offers an in-store Cooking department combining baking items, spices, bulk items, cookbooks, cooking tools, and demonstrations to engage, inspire and educate shoppers about the joy of cooking. The Cooking area features an on-site computer kiosk with specially developed content, recipes and information compiled in partnership with the online social media food hub, Food52, started by Amanda Hesser and Merrill Stubbs. The website featured in-store at Cooking Yonkers, will also launch for shoppers home use on October 3rd at www.wholefoodsmarketcooking.com.  The department will also house the store’s Healthy Eating Specialist, Ronna Corlin, who will offer tips, one-on-one consultations and classes in-line with Whole Foods Market’s Health Starts Here national healthy eating program.
