AUSTIN, TX (Oct. 7, 2009) – Allegro Coffee Company, a branch of leading natural and organic retailer Whole Foods Market, is featuring Kanyovu light roast coffee to benefit the Jane Goodall Institute. With every purchase of this single origin coffee, shoppers will support efforts to reforest the area around Tanzania’s Gombe Stream National Park, a preserve in the region where the coffee is grown, ultimately sustaining the area for local farmers and restoring habitat for endangered chimpanzees.
“Supporting the Jane Goodall Institute was a natural direction for us,” said Jeff Teter, president of Allegro Coffee Company. “Our focus has always been on sourcing exceptional beans that not only make a wonderful cup of coffee but also help to ensure our farmers' long-term livelihood and encourage them to preserve their environment.”
With Allegro's support, coffee growers in the Kanyovu region can utilize traditional and sustainable growing, harvesting and processing practices that help keep the land healthy and fruitful.
Allegro's Single Origin Tanzanian coffee is a light roast with flavors of blackberry, peach, tangerine and black tea and a sweet honey finish. It can be found only at Whole Foods Market. Thanks to the Jane Goodall “Good for All” brand—a small green and white graphic bearing Dr. Goodall’s photo—the coffee is easy for shoppers to spot on shelves. With donations made as a result of the sale of this coffee, Allegro will have contributed nearly $20,000 to the Jane Goodall Institute by the end of this year.
Dr. Jane Goodall, the renowned primatologist and conservationist, began studying the behavior of Gombe’s wild chimpanzees nearly 50 years ago. Today, the research program that she pioneered is one of the largest uninterrupted field studies of any wild animal species. The Institute, founded in 1977, continues this research in addition to programs that support chimpanzee protection, community-centered conservation in Africa, and global youth leadership through Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots (rootsandshoots.org).
